Tilly's Home Sewing Space Tour (with Video!)

Tilly's home sewing space tour

Want to take a peek around my home sewing space? Seeing as we’ve all been spending more time at home recently, I thought I’d give you a tour of the place I've been spending a lot of time in. We even made a little video!

If you're a long time reader, you may have seen some of my previous sewing space tours. My latest space is in the house we moved to two years ago now. We're lucky enough to have a spare room, which is a multifunctional space - we use it as our home office (for both me and my partner), my sewing room, there's a futon for guests, plus this is where we hang up the laundry to dry, do the ironing, and even have a little play table for our son.

Yes, there's a lot going on in here - so organisation is key. And no, it's not always this tidy!

My sewing table itself is a cheapo table top and legs from Ikea. I like to keep the sewing machine and overlocker out and keep the rest of the table as clear as possible to make it an inviting space to sit down and sew in. In the past I've had to sew on the kitchen table, getting my machines out and packing them away for each sewing session, and it really does make such a difference to the amount you sew if you can find a little permanent corner for them to stay out in.

Of course, not everyone has the space for a dedicated sewing table - in which case take a look at my tips on sewing in a shared space.

Above the table, I keep scissors, tape measure, pattern cutting tools, and little bits such as needles and seam rippers in little pots (from Amazon) hanging from two rails (from Ikea). This helps keep my table clear.

Then I have two shelves above the table where I keep some of my pattern collection (the pink baskets were gifted from Mustard Made a while back), threads, pins and so on. I love to organise my threads by colour - the rainbow really brightens up the room.

I keep my cutting tools (scissors, rotary cutter, marking tools, pencil and glue for pattern alterations...) in a pink plant pot that I can just grab and take downstairs to the kitchen table whenever I'm going to cut out a new project.

Underneath my table is a blush pink locker which was gifted by Mustard Made a while back. This is my favourite thing in the room. I keep projects in progress, interfacing, random extra tools and other crafty bits and bobs in here, safely under lock and key away from the curious hands of my little boy!

I store my fabric stash on the opposite side of room on a Kallax shelf from Ikea. I like to keep fabric neatly rolled up and fastened with elastic bands - that way it's easy to see what I have and to pull pieces out without messing up the rest of the shelf. I try to keep knits, wovens and childrens fabric in different compartments so I can easily find what I'm looking for.

On top of the shelf, my tiered sewing box stores buttons and other fastenings. Plus I seem to have acquired a growing collection of jersey ribbings, so they now have their own department! The bag is one of our Eden raincoat kits from a while back that I am hoping to make any day now - the motto on the bag says it all, no? And hiding at the back is a sewing machine that I've been meaning to get serviced for, like, everrr - don't judge!!
