After months of prepping behind the scenes we are unbelievably excited to share our newest favourite sewing pattern with you – meet Eden!

The Eden raincoat or coat is particularly special for us as it’s our first outerwear pattern. Our lovely customers have been asking for us to release a jacket or coat pattern for a loooong time and we think this raincoat and duffle is the perfect addition to the Tilly and the Buttons family.

We wanted to create a pattern that you'll get a lot of wear out of in different seasons. Make it in a lighter weight fabric to see you through the milder months, or in a cosy coating for chilly weather. Oh, and did we mention it's fully lined? The beauty of the Eden coat is that it’s so versatile and looks totally different depending on the fabric choice and optional features you go for. Raincoats are on trend right now and, let’s face it, these classic designs never go out of style. Whatever the season, you’re going to look (and feel) fab!

Want to find out more? Let’s dive straight in.

Tilly took inspiration from her own wardrobe when designing Eden. She lives in her raincoat jacket in spring and Autumn (and, let’s face it, most of the summer in the UK) and loves snuggling up in her beloved duffle coat in the colder months. The Eden incorporates the best features of these trusty coats – practical details with modern and playful twists. It truly is a pattern that you can love season after season for years to come.

Eden is a classic raincoat and duffle coat all in one. It has raglan sleeves, a generous high neck hood (perfect for keeping out the elements!), and a handy hanging loop so you can still admire it when you’re not wearing it. It is also fully lined – woop, new skill alert!

Choose from hip or long lengths, hidden or visible snaps, optional toggle fastenings, optional zip, two pocket styles and optional storm flaps. The pleated pockets pop when made in a crisper fabric or, if you're sewing with wool, go for the rectangular pockets, roomy enough to stash all your essentials (snacks are an essential, right?).

You can make an Eden to suit pretty much any activity you do. Whether you’re on a weekend walk, dropping off the kids on the school run or dancing in the rain at your favourite festival, you can wear your DIY jacket or coat with pride. And the best thing about wearing your own me-made outerwear? Even more opportunities to show it off!

THE SEWING KIT

We’ve put together some Eden sewing kits with everything you need to sew the short jacket version. I (Nikki) have searched far and wide to source the most beautiful and eye-catching, high quality fabric and notions for these kits - trust me, it's no mean feat to source lilac waxed cotton!

The kits currently come in two colourways. The fabric is a gorgeous water-resistant waxed cotton, manufactured in UK mills. There's enough included to make the hip length jacket version, with or without the storm flaps.

For the lining, we've got for soft cotton jersey - stripey, of course. One of my favourite features of the jacket is that you can turn up the cuffs to show off a peek of the lining, and both our lining options are drool worthy!

The kit also includes a YKK open-ended metal zip, three spools of matching thread, three wooden toggles and cord, sew-in snaps and high-quality iron-on woven interfacing.

It all comes in a special Tilly and the Buttons drawstring backpack, made from a sustainable crop and printed in the UK. Use it as a project bag to keep everything tidy and in one place whilst you are sewing - and then wear sling it on your back when you go out and about.

There are a few different supplies to gather for this pattern and our kits mean that everything is available for you to start sewing straight away. We have a limited number in stock so, if you want one, grab it before it’s gone!

THE SEWING PATTERN

If you’ve never sewn a coat before we promise, you can do it! Our award-winning, jargon-busting instructions take you through each step and are accompanied by clear colour photos. The pattern pieces are clearly labelled so you can see which seam is which, and how they go together.

We’ve labelled the Eden pattern suitable for improvers. There's nothing particularly difficult involved, but it is a lot of steps. Worth it for how much wear you'll get out of it! You don’t need to have sewn a coat before, in fact this would be a great pattern for an outerwear newbie, or a satisfying project for a more experienced stitcher.

The trickiest bit of construction is bagging out the lining (where the lining and coat are attached on the inside so you can’t see any seams) but fear not, it’s totally doable once you know how! Look out for a blog post and video we’ve made to give you an extra helping hand with this bit.

Order the printed pattern and we’ll send you a gorgeous package in the post, printed on durable paper that can be used again and again.

If you prefer to print and assemble your pattern at home, order the PDF pattern and you’ll get an email in an instant with a PDF to download. As well as tiled sheets to print at home on A4 or Letter paper, you'll also receive A0 files with your PDF order so you can get them printed at a copyshop if you don't like cutting and sticking.

Eden is also available from fabric shops and departments stores around the world. If your favourite shop doesn’t stock it, remember you can always ask them to!

SIZING AND SUPPLIES

The pattern includes eight sizes – from UK 6 – 20, US 2 – 16, or EUR 34 – 48. You can see the exact body measurements on the sizing chart. The pattern is pretty simple to fit as there is a lot of ease. The most important measurement is choosing the correct bust size, then re-drawing the side seams to join up with your hip measurement. If you need further help with sizing and fitting look out for a blog post all about this coming soon.

Eden is designed for medium- to heavy-weight woven fabrics. Choose a wool coating for a snuggly coat, or for a lighter wait jacket go for cotton drill, waxed canvas, Gore-Tex, ripstop, PUL or cotton laminate. For the lining, try viscose, acetate, polyester or cotton lawn, or even low stretch jersey for a casual anorak lining. We've got a blog post coming soon with a few fabric options if our kit colourways aren't your style, as well as a post specifically focused on sewing with water-resistant fabrics, so watch this space.

All versions need snaps, whether press-on or sew-in, visible or hidden. The zip is optional. And toggles are optional too. Look out for an upcoming post on inspiration for your toggles...

Find out how much fabric and other supplies you’ll need for each version on the shop page.
