Inspo for making your Eden coat or jacket

Inspo for making your Eden coat or jacket

Have you heard the news? Team Buttons launched our first ever coat pattern - Eden! She's not only gorgeous, she's incredibly versatile too. This will be a me-made garment that you will wear again and again and treasure for many years to come.

It’s Louise here, and I am going to give you a little inspo for making your dream coat. Eden is a chameleon and can look so different depending on what fabric, style, fastenings, and lining you opt for. I have spent many hours lusting over the possibilities on Pinterest, so thought I'd share some ideas for what you can do with this perfectly practical coat.

The first idea is pretty obvious, I know - go for a solid colour! Whether you choose a bright, pastel, or muted colour, the solid base is a great way to show off the design details. You can have fun with a contrast lining and roll your sleeves up to flash a peek of what's inside, or go for contrast fastenings that stand out and allow the storm flap detail to be the star of the show. My personal favourite is this parma violet jacket that is just like the Eden pattern cover and is available as a kit on our shop.

If you like your outerwear to make a statement, why not have some fun with print? I love the idea of making Eden a classic with a gingham or stripe. I have a Prince of Wales check oilcloth that is going to make a subtle statement. You can go bold with a striking print like this leopard print jacket above. I'm making my first Eden in a super cute Orla Kiely style raincoat fabric that is going to turn showers into smiles!

One of the ideas I am most excited about is a transparent raincoat. You can let your outfit shine through your stylish coat, while keeping dry - clever eh? Creating something like this would require adapting the pattern to make it work. You would need to omit the lining and facings and either use French seams or binding on the seams - so not for the faint hearted. But imagine the fun you would have in this creation! Totally worth it : )

Lots of pattern pieces mean lots of opportunity to create a stunning effect with colour blocking. You can go for contrasting pockets and hood, make the raglan sleeves stand out with a print, or tweak the pattern to go for a half and half look, like this pink and blue pastel dream jacket! I also really love the simple effect of using different coloured snap fastenings - it's such a playful detail. Tilly's debating between a red-and-pink combo or powder-blue-navy-and-red colourblock wool wonder for her next Eden - watch this space...

Last but by no means least, I have been lusting over the perfect winter Eden coat. This is a pattern that can fit into your wardrobe at any point in the season. Create a cosy wool duffle coat that will make your winter style shine each year that Eden makes an appearance. You can have so much fun with toggle details, or why not go for a lux faux fur hood to keep you warm and stylish whatever the weather throws at you? It's worth thinking about now because there are inevitably still a good few weeks of cold left, in the UK at least, and you'll be pulling out your winter coat in no time.

I hope this round-up has given you an idea of some of the possibilities for Eden. Your outerwear will never be an afterthought again!
