Inspiration for making Jessa

Inspiration for making Jessa

Have you seen our latest pattern addition? Say hiya to the Jessa trousers and shorts - a gorgeous pair of flares that you just won't wanna take off!

It's Louise here from team Buttons, a style obsessed sewer who is always on the look out for inspo to bring into my stitching. I wanna share some ideas and fabric suggestions with you for making this super cute pattern.

If you haven't read Nikki's introduction post, then pop on over because she shares all the details you need to know about this design.

When it comes to fabric shopping for you perfect pair of Jessas, what do you need to know? Jessa is designed for medium- to heavy-weight woven fabrics such as denim, corduroy, cotton drill, linen, or triple crepe if you're after a more flowy and romantic silhouette. Stretch isn't required but a small amount of elastane will make them extra comfy.

I have scoured our favourite fabric shops for some good options and have broken them down into a few look ideas. If you are off on holiday, you might want to consider a natural fibre like linen that will breathe and keep you cool. Denim is hard-wearing, so a good choice for your every day pair and the triple crepe and stretch cotton fabrics I found would make the perfect showstopping pair of Jessas.

Whatever you go for, have fun with this make because life is too short to be wearing boring trousers!

French Riviera style was a big influence on the design of the Romy and Jessa patterns - cool, understated, but definitely screaming 'look at me'! I love the idea of a pair of striped shorts worn with an easy-breezy white shirt and wide-brimmed sun hat to top off the look.

A lovely pair of red linen shorts (fabric no.6), or azure blue twill trousers (fabric no.1) worn with a Breton striped Romy - et Voila! Super chic vibes, even if you are just popping to the supermarket : )

Neutrals are a perfect choice to create a pair of Jessas that feel like a statement, but one that says, 'I'm laidback'. They are a great base and will go with so many pieces in your wardrobe, plus there's something about a neutral that screams simple elegance while looking like they just strolled out of  boutique.

Oh if I could wear a white pair of Jessas I so would (I think just me looking at them means they are destined for a tea stain)! I love this white stretch denim (no.2) and the natural bull denim (no.4) is super cool. Rosey-pink hues are also a lovely choice and this pink jumbo cord (no.1) and linen (no.5) tick all the boxes.

Finding a shade of blue that is just right is a little like Goldilocks, so to save you the trouble of searching high and low, I've found some denims are just waiting to become your new favourite pair of Jessas.

When you make your own clothes it's like you have opened Pandora's Box of possibilities. So why not go bold and have some fun with your Jessa trousers or shorts?  You will not only turn heads, but find yourself being asked where you got your dreamy me made bottoms.

I am completely obsessed with the idea of gingham Jessa trousers and have found the perfect fabric (no.1) to make them in - drumroll please... with stretch! you could also channel the animal print trend with a super cool pair of Jessa shorts - I have stroked no.4 IRL and it is soooo nice.

The 70s called... they want their trousers back! Jessa is most definitely a 70s girl, so it would be rude not to create something inspired by her favourite era. Our favourite way to wear Jessa is with a 70s stripe or slogan tee with platform clogs and a huge pair of sunnies!

Look at these beauties! I need a pair of Jessa shorts in this striped denim - it's just the coolest. We used this teal chunky cord for our model shoot which worked really well and I can just picture the mustard being gorgeous.

I hope this has made you excited about all the possibilities for Jessa... it has made me add at least three (hundred) pairs to my make list. Don't forget to tag #SewingJessa on Instagram so we can see what you have made xxx
