Introducing my new favourite garment!

For my first version of our new sewing pattern, the Bobbi pinafore, I pulled out a classic indigo blue denim in my stash - and I'm so happy with how it's turned out. I went with plain silver jeans buttons, and used one of our dungaree buckles sets. I made the pinafore version with hip pockets and flap bib pocket.

Since making it, I've worn it two to three times a week, layered over Agnes tops, shirts and jumpers. It's nice enough to feel put together at work, and practical enough for hanging out with my son at playgroup - that flap bib pocket is the perfect size for keeping cash and cards safe ready to buy him raisins and me coffee!

One of the things I love about this pattern is that it uses surprisingly little fabric - just 1.3-1.5m (1½-1¾yd) for the pinafore if your fabric is 150cm (60in) wide, even less for the skirt. We recommend using medium-weight woven cotton for the bib lining and hip pocket linings, so it's a great way of using up remnants in your stash.

The denim had a bit of stretch in it (not necessary for this pattern), so I had to take it in a little at the waist and hips. Since then I've made another one in non-stretch corduroy, which didn't need any adjustments - even if you've made a pattern before, always make sure you fit as you go as the fabric can have a big impact on how it fits you.

I'm so happy to have found a new wardrobe staple! As mentioned, I've made another one in chunky black corduroy with a floral lining, and am already dreaming up several more versions...

If you make your own Bobbi pinafore or skirt, do share with us on Instagram @TillyButtons with the hashtag #SewingBobbi - I'd love to see it :)
