THE INSPIRATION
Tilly was inspired to design the Erin dungarees after she wanted something practical, cosy and comfortable to wear that also looked and felt great. And we think she got it just right! The Erin dungarees are absurdly comfy. Seriously, once you make a pair, you won’t want to wear anything else! The whole TATB office is obsessed with Erin. We’ve made six pairs between us so far, and this number is rapidly increasing...
They're also simple to sew, and extremely versatile, with multiple versions and wide a variety of fabrics to choose from, including knits as well as wovens (yessss!).
The bib is gently shaped with princess seams, lined for a tidy finish, and held up with adjustable ties that can either be pulled through buttonholes in the bib or tied at the shoulders. Easy-fitting, Erin has a choice of tapered full-length, cropped- or shorts-length legs, and in-seam pockets at the lowline waist for stashing your phone or posing nonchalantly.
Which version will you make first?

SEWALONG
We're teaming up with our friends at Janome to bring you a FREE full Erin Dungarees Sewalong! You read that right, a FULL sewalong with videos, breaking down every step of making your own Erin dungas - including fabric shopping, fitting and of course - the sewing!
Here at Tilly and the Buttons, we're big fans of Janome sewing machines - Tilly started sewing on Janome machines and we've been using the Janome DKS100 model in the studio for years! Stay tuned for the sewalong launch on Friday 25th March 2021, where we'll let you know what to expect and when, along with which dreamy Janome sewing machines we'll be using.
Follow the Erin sewalong!
If you're in need of some quick tips and tutorials for your Erin makes, we've got you! If you’re making the buttonhole tie version, you might find our video tutorials for sewing one-step buttonholes and for sewing four-step buttonholes for some extra tips and tricks, whatever the capability of your sewing machine. Buttonholes can sometimes make sewists feel a little nervous before they tackle them, but we promise you will be fine! There are only two buttonholes to sew, so you’ll be done in no time.
We’ve also got a blog post on understitching if you need a helping hand in that area too. Otherwise, visit the Erin dungarees sewalong for more sewing help.
FABRICS & SUPPLIES
One of our favourite things about Erin is that the dungarees can be made in both woven and knit fabrics - the dream!
Erin works well with a wide range of fabrics, from medium-weight soft woven fabrics such as needlecord, linen and soft cotton twill, through lighter-weight drapey wovens such as viscose (rayon) or Tencel (lyocell), to low stretch knit fabrics such as French terry and ponte roma. The range of fabrics makes it great for year-round wear!
If you’re using a relatively thick fabric such as needlecord, use a light-to-medium weight cotton for the bib lining (and pockets if you like) – otherwise you can use your main fabric for the lining too.
Check on the Erin sewalong page to see our sewing inspiration blog post.
SIZING AND FORMATS
Erin is our first sewing pattern to be *printed* in sizes UK 6-34 / US 2-30 / EUR 34-62! We're delighted to be offering our two size bands combined into one product.
Our award-winning sewing patterns feature clear instructions with step-by-step colour photos to guide you through the project. The pattern pieces themselves are clearly labelled so you can see which seam is which and how they go together.
Erin is also available as an instant PDF download in sizes UK 6-34. You'll get an email straight after purchase with a PDF to either print and assemble at home on A4 or Letter size paper or send to a copyshop or pattern printer to print full scale on A0. Need further help? Read our guide to using PDFs.
For more information on our combined UK 6-34 pattern size, check out our blog post for what it means for our patterns and the differences in the fit.
For Erin the most noticeable difference is in pattern sizes 1-6 (UK 6-16) the front and back bibs are the same length whereas, in our pattern sizes 7-15 (UK 18-34) the front bib is longer to accommodate a fuller bust.
Check on the Erin sewalong page for our upcoming posts on preparing your pattern and fitting help.
As always, we love seeing your makes and progress shots so don't forget to tag us on Instagram @TillyButtons using the hashtag #SewingErin so we can see what you've made.
