The fabric is a sandwashed Tencel twill which I bought from The Fabric Room. If you haven't sewn with Tencel before, it's also known as lyocell (Tencel is a brand name), and is a relatively new eco fabric that we're seeing more and more on the high street in ready-to-wear clothing.
It's man-made from wood pulp using an environmentally-friendly production process. Sewing with Tencel is a bit like working with viscose (rayon), in that it has a lovely drape but isn't as difficult to sew as something like a delicate charmeuse or chiffon.

I love wearing this top with skinny blue jeans, and more recently have been throwing it on with leggings too. The dipped hem means it's long enough to cover my bum so I don't feel exposed, and the loose style and empire line waist makes it roomy and comfy enough for a long day juggling work with running after my little boy. I can throw it on (no zips or buttonholes - yesss...) with my favourite Oliver Bonas necklace when I want to look like I've made a bit of an effort for a meeting, and whip the necklace off to go down the slide in the playground (surely the best perk of living with a toddler).

The versatility of this design has my brain bursting with ideas for all the Indigo smocks I want to make, from breezy cotton tops to swishy party dresses. If you make one of your own, please do share with us on Instagram @TillyButtons #SewingIndigo - I'd love to see!
