Introducing the Nora Cardigan Add-On Pattern!

Nora cardigan sewing pattern add-on - Tilly and the Buttons

We're thrilled to launch something a bit different for you today - meet the Nora cardigan add-on pattern!

The Nora cardigan add-on is a digital download of bonus pattern pieces and instructions to turn our Nora top pattern into a cosy, casual cardigan. The Nora top is already one of our most popular and versatile patterns so we're delighted to breathe some new life into it to make it go even further.

Tilly shared a post earlier this year showing how she hacked the Nora top pattern into a snuggly cardigan. Lots of people got in touch to say they'd love to make it but didn't feel confident hacking the pattern themselves, so we thought we'd do the hard work so you don't have to :)

Team Tilly were already addicted to the Nora top and now they are absolutely in love with the cardigan version. It's a lovely me-made that you can throw on when it gets chilly. Plus it's so quick to make you can go from cutting out the fabric to wearing your brand new cardi within a couple of hours. What's better than that?!

As this is an add-on pattern,  you'll also need the original Nora top pattern to make the cardigan. If you don't have it yet, grab the Nora top and cardigan bundle.

THE DESIGN

The Nora cardigan has a boxy, oversized shape with drop shoulders, hip-length hem, extra-long snuggly sleeves and optional patch pockets. Designed for low stretch knit fabrics, you can make it on either a regular sewing machine or overlocker (serger). It's exceedingly simple to make and you can whip it up in just a couple of hours.

The Nora cardigan can be teamed with so many outfits. Like, seriously. The team have been layering their cardigans over jeans and causal t-shirts, Ness skirts and Freya mock necks tops, and smock dresses, to name a few. Louise has even been spotted wearing double Nora - the cardigan version over the top version, no less. All the heart eyes.

THE SEWING PATTERN

Our award-winning patterns feature clear instructions with step-by-step colour photos to guide you through the project. The pattern pieces themselves are clearly labelled so you can see which seam is which and how they go together.

The add-on pattern includes a new front bodice, front facing, back facing and patch pocket, plus instructions on how to make the cardigan. You'll also need the back bodice and sleeve pattern pieces from the Nora pattern to make the full garment. The add-on pack instructions take you through how to make the cardigan from start to finish - you don't need to refer back and forth between the two booklets to make it. Phew!

The Nora cardigan is suitable for confident beginners. It's super quick and simple to make - no darts, fastenings, gathering, set-in sleeves or other fiddly bits. The only reason it's labelled for "confident" beginners rather than complete newbies is that it's designed for knit fabrics, so needs a zigzag stitch rather than a straight stitch. If you're new to sewing with knits, this is a great place to start as you can use low stretch fabric and it doesn't include a neckband, which can be a little fiddly for beginners.

The Nora cardigan add-on pack is a digital-only pattern. Upon purchase, you'll receive a PDF pattern for immediate download. You can either print it at home on A4 or letter size paper, or send it to the copy shop to print large scale.

SIZING AND SUPPLIES

The Nora cardigan can be made in medium- to heavy-weight low stretch knit fabrics, such as sweatshirting, French terry, ponte roma, double jersey, thicker sweater knits and jacquard knit. It's finished with a simple facing, so you'll want to avoid anything too stretchy or drapey. Tilly made these samples in a floral Liberty loop back sweatshirt fabric and a pink mystery low-stretch knit, both bought from Fabrics Galore.

Louise has written a fantastic blog post about fabric shopping for the Nora top and loads of those fabrics are suitable for the cardigan version. Check out the sweater, ponte and double knits sections for some drool-worthy fabric inspo. Find out how much fabric and other supplies you’ll need for each version on the shop page.

The Nora cardigan pattern includes eight sizes – from UK 6 – 20, US 2 – 16, or EUR 34 – 48. You can see the exact body measurements on the sizing chart. It's ridiculously simple to fit thanks to the oversize boxy shape, drop shoulders and open front.
